LNG and the Region
Securing Australia’s regional role by driving investment, supporting regional decarbonisation and energy security, by remaining a trusted, long-term energy partner.
A Reliable Energy Partner in Our Region
Australia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector plays a vital role in supporting energy security and emissions reduction across the Asia–Pacific. Supplying around 40 per cent of Japan’s and 25 per cent of South Korea’s gas demand, Australia remains one of the world’s most trusted and reliable energy partners.
More than $400 billion has been invested in Australian LNG and gas projects since 2010, unlocking critical domestic supply while meeting around one fifth of global LNG demand. Continued international investment in Australia’s gas industry strengthens economic ties, supports local jobs, and underpins the nation’s strategic relationships with key regional partners.
Future opportunities are significant — the International Energy Agency projects LNG demand in Southeast Asia could grow eight-fold by 2050. To capture this potential, Australia must ensure clear, stable policy settings that support long-term contracts and new investment confidence.
Australia can also help deliver regional emissions reduction through the transport and permanent storage of captured CO₂ — a major new opportunity worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Accelerating regulatory frameworks and bilateral agreements will be essential for Australia to realise this potential and maintain its position as a dependable, forward-looking energy partner.
